V************************************* Pacific Islands Campaign Games ***************************************V Guam The retaking of this US territory took the 77th Infantry Division and the 3rd Marine Division. It was the southern island in the Marianas chain and followed the Battles for Saipan and Tinian by a couple weeks. Saipan/Tinian 2 Islands that caused great stress between the US Army and Marine Corps. These were needed for the strategic bombing campaign and the B29 bombers, but were very hard to take. Iwo Jima The toughest island to capture. This place caused over 20,000 Marine casualties and gave Americans the impression that invading Japan would be very bloody and led to the decision to drop the A-Bombs. Pelelieu/Angaur 2 Islands that possibly should never have been invaded. The Marines and Army troops were supposed to be done in 2 weeks. This battle lasts over 2 months and has more US casualties than Japanese. |
